I love polished, stylized photographs as much as the next person. But sometimes the moments you really want to capture are a little less perfect. This home photography session with my former photography teacher and her family wasn’t always perfect. Rachael’s daughter, Oona, had missed a nap and the lighting was dim at times. I could have taken Rachael’s family to a park with even lighting all around. I could have brought a soft box to light the photographs we took inside her home. I’ve done this plenty of times with folks! But some of these moments would have been lost had I done that. I love the way these photographs turned out. They show raw emotion and real expressions because they were taken where the family is most comfortable. I’m so grateful for people like Rachael who invite me into their homes to capture these sweet little moments. Thank you.
My friend Kaïa and I met in our freshman year of high school. I had just started getting into photography, and Kaïa was also a photographer. We’d go out all the time together and set up little photoshoots. This past week, we went out like old times for a spring photo session on the Vista Bridge and Portland’s International Rose Test Garden. But this time, we’re eleven years older. I’ll always love and appreciate Kaïa for sharing my love for photography. Thanks for coming out with me, my friend!
