We all want to look amazing in our professional headshots. Here are eight simple tips for making the most out of your headshot session:
Floss and brush.
That’s right! It seems obvious, but many people forget to do this before their headshot session. It only takes a couple of minutes and makes a big difference in how your smile looks!
Don’t wear pilling clothes.
Clothes that have pilled (gotten buildup of loose balls or strands of fabric) are distracting in photos. Often times, pilling is able to be Photoshopped out, but that costs your photographer time and it costs you extra $$. Plus, nothing is going to look as professional in your photos as clean, fresh fabrics. Before your session, consider treating yourself to a new outfit or two. I love silk, chiffon, and strong cotton fabrics.
Iron, steam, and lint roll your clothes before your session.
Clothes wrinkle and attract dust and hair easily. I bring a lint roller to headshot sessions, but the more prepared you are, the less time we’ll spend prepping your look on-site.
If you have straight hair, use hairspray or a little wax to tame flyaways.
If you have curly hair, do what you usually do to it, and nothing more.
Curly hair is so wonderful! Flyaways are a lot less noticeable when you have curly hair.
If you wear makeup, wear more than you usually would.
A lot of people are afraid to wear more makeup usual, but trust me: makeup doesn’t show up on camera like it does in person. If you usually wear just a touch of eyeshadow and lip gloss, consider filling in your brows and using foundation. Go a little darker on the shadow. I’ve converted multiple people on this when I’ve delivered their photos. And if you’re nervous, wear less makeup to your session, but bring your makeup with you. I can help make adjustments.
The best way to get multiple looks quickly? Bring a selection of accessories and clothing items that can be taken on and off easily: scarves, shoes, jewelry, and blazers/coats. With just a few fun accessories, we can create several looks.
You look great, so breathe!
Take a few minutes to chill out and relax before your headshot session. It’ll do wonders! Before you leave for your session, treat yourself to a little something that calms you down and makes you happy - like drinking a cup of coffee, journaling, or enjoying a little fresh air. That way, when you arrive, you’ll be more at ease and ready to go. And if you’re still feeling nervous, just tell me. I’m here for you!
